Tomorrow is the day of Trick or Treats. Children will don costumes of various characters from heroes to villains. This is their opportunity to project one of their fantasies into the world. As leaders, it is important that we recognize this critical development activity for our children and future workforce. This creativity is necessary to build problem-solving skills. They explore the realities of what heroes or villains contribute or take away from society.
As you read this, you might be scratching your head thinking that children don’t think that deeply about the costume they wear or how that costume portrays to the community what and how their developing minds are forming. You may be correct. The reality is that these somewhat subtle creative moments in time do, in fact, have their place in forming our future communities and workforce.
As leaders, we tend to live in the present moment. We may be dealing with talent shortages and wondering about the impact it will have tomorrow, the week after next, and into the future. We spend in the near term while failing to strategically invest in the future workforce that will be in place when our leadership term is over.
As we wrap up the month of October. We should be into our company’s annual business planning and strategic review for 2026. As you assess your business’s performance and challenges, consider long-term investments that strategically position your business for the future and the talent emerging from this country’s youth. What initiative can your organization adopt to invest in future talent? How can your organization collaborate with local schools at all levels to foster more business-oriented development? How can your organization best utilize its leadership team to go out into educational programs and share its Core Purpose, Core Values, and Core Principles, thereby engaging the minds of our youth and nurturing an entrepreneurial spirit?
Leadership is not restricted to the daily operations of your business. Leadership includes your active participation in the communities your organization co-exists with customers, vendors, and society. It is very easy to dismiss your role in leadership for the future. May you be challenged this time of the year when planning your future business results, that you open your mind and plans to investing in the future workforce of tomorrow.
