The Business of Potluck

During the holidays, we all enjoyed many feasts of outstanding foods. Some of those meals might have been family, friends, or community gatherings where everyone brings a dish to pass.  These feasts are typically called potluck dinners, as the choices are varied and one is never sure exactly what might be on the menu.  One common thing is that the dishes prepared and brought to the feast are always the very best dishes the provider can make.  Bringing a dish to a meal is not a time to experiment or guess.  It is a time to put your best cooking talents forward and dazzle the guests.

We are now a whole month into 2026, and new opportunities and new challenges have come to light. The plans crafted in 2025 are being rolled out, and you are evaluating whether new information needs to be incorporated to ensure a successful outcome. One of the key factors in any plan is the team within your organization that executes it.  The players on the team and their specific roles become increasingly crucial as the team moves forward.

Much like a potluck dinner, each member brings their best talents to the table.  They should not be experimenting or guessing their way through the plans. They should be executing their roles in the organization and dazzling the team and customers alike. Your team should be making their best efforts for every opportunity and challenge that lies ahead.

Like a potluck dinner, your team brings variety and many points of view to the business.  This diversity needs to be leveraged as a strength to elevate the entire entity to its next level of success. As you might look around the buffet table at all the dish options, as a business leader, you need to look around your organization at all the possible talents that can be engaged to their next best level of contribution. When each person is nurtured to develop, grow, and contribute, their self-worth matures, and they become a better team member.
