What one thing can I do better?

It sounds like a fairly straightforward question, and in many of our minds, it should be a pretty basic answer.  There are always things we are thinking about that we could tweak or adjust to do or be something better. At least that is the perception most of us would start with when pondering such a question. Unfortunately, this is just another glossing over of a more profound opportunity to dig deeper into the question, or shall we say, deeper into what the question is really asking?

Each and every day, the volumes of noise, distractions, positive and negative opportunities abound. This is continuous and bombards the mind with many options for dealing with this issue or that item of the moment.  The question must be asked: what one thing can I do better to achieve the desired outcome? With so much noise, we have drifted away from identifying priorities amid the chaos. This is not only true for business owners and leaders.  It is equally true, if not more of a factor, in your team.

Technology, by its speed and availability, has contributed to this drift. The working population almost uses social media as its caffeine.  A simulant to move from this action to the next.  A mobile phone rings or vibrates, a smart watch displays a message, your PC pings the arrival of another email, and so on. Every noise, vibration, and chirp is another distraction that shifts the present moment to an alternate enticement.

This is in no way saying technology is a bad thing.  It brings great value and results to the business marketplace.  What is the one thing you can do better in 2026? Take an active role in using technology rather than having it run you.

This is a mighty effort to take on.  We are already into the second month of 2026, and how many of us have already broken those New Year’s resolutions? If you haven’t, then congratulations! If you have, then it is now time to start again.  Breaking a resolution is not a failure unless you elect not to address the broken attempt and start again.  As indicated earlier, our world is full of distractions.   Every one of them is pulling against your priorities or resolutions.  Therefore, in order to take that step back toward your priorities, you need to begin by controlling or at least managing the chaos of noise swirling around you.

This week, as you elect to restart your resolutions or maybe return to your priorities, start with a simple yet not easy technique: pause and enter a moment of silence.  At first, you will find this challenging as the noise will continue to seek your attention.  With time, by entering the classroom of silence, you will find that your mind, your priorities, and your actions will align and have greater contribution value.

You need to build the mental muscle to equip yourself to be able to do this on the spur of the moment.  You will begin to find that by silencing your mind and slowing down the chaos, things will be clearer, and actions will be better prioritized.  This might just be that one thing you can do this year to improve yourself and your ability to contribute at a higher level.
