Lately, we have heard a lot about Artificial Intelligence(AI). In some circles, you may have heard of Emotional Intelligence (EQ). How about good old Human Intelligence?
Let’s start with some terms and definitions.
Human intelligence refers to the intellectual capabilities of humans, including the ability to learn from experience, adapt to new situations, and understand abstract concepts. It is characterized by several cognitive processes, including learning, adaptation, reasoning, problem-solving, communication, and self-awareness, just to name a few.
There is a possibility that some might connect human intelligence with common sense. The challenge is that the word “common” has quite an array of interpretations. This brings us back to human intelligence, as our experiences and environment have shaped our individual knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the world we participate in. The stories of our lives and the content we feed our brains directly influence the development and refinement of our intelligence and how we apply it to the dynamics of each subsequent event. It is not just about IQ, EQ, or even AI. It is about what we do with the intellectual talents we are given.
Really smart people can do outrageously foolish things, and people with mental impairments can do some pretty outstanding things. When we look through that lens, we can start to better appreciate that our human intelligence can either be an enabler or a disabler. We choose how we want to use it.
So how does this apply to business and leadership?
As leaders in business, our organizations are moved forward by the people who operate the organization. Yes, you are one of the pieces of the success puzzle, but it is not just you who makes the business operate successfully. As you engage talent into your business, you do your very best to assess how this person or that individual fits into the culture and the role contribution objectives. You may have a thorough hiring intake process that helps align new talent not only with the role but also with the culture of the business.
It is additionally valuable to help gain a fuller appreciation of their human intelligence and how that plays into their contribution to the business moving forward. Pure intellect, pure emotional rhythm, and a dose of AI do not align well if they can operate independently on their own two feet.
This week, take a look at the system for talent intake to see if it includes steps to identify and uncover gaps which the business will need to cover if/when the resource misses a beat. Additionally, take a look at your annual goals and employee evaluation systems to see if they also bring to the surface opportunities to develop human intelligence to support not only the business but each of the individuals’ lives as well.
