Pursuit of Happiness!

As our nation continues its year-long celebration of 250 years, it is a good time to revisit part of the Declaration of Independence. Specifically, that very important element of pursuing happiness. Our forefathers did not indicate that this freedom experiment called the United States would be without challenges. In fact, they placed their entire lives at stake in the Revolutionary War to uphold their convictions to enable citizens the opportunity to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

As business leaders, there are days when the pursuit of happiness feels satisfying, and other days when you may question whether it will ever be possible for your organization to achieve happiness. We need to appreciate that our forefathers had some of the same challenges – mental, emotional, physical, etc. The key is that they did not give in to these challenges.  They continued to pursue a dream of freedom from the tyranny they experienced from their prior homeland.

As leaders, we too have a declaration for our businesses and organizations.  You might call it your Purpose, your Vision, your Mission or Credo. You also have your “Bill of Rights,” which is framed in your Core Values and Key Principle statements. These key documents shape your business’s future.  Like the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, they stand the test of time and assist in governance of all the people in your organization. They bind them together into a team of focused individuals who have a common outcome they are working toward. As you move forward during 2026, take some time to revisit your Purpose, Vision, Mission, Core Values, and Key Principles so you keep them top of mind with your team.

As with the Freedom Experiment call the United States of America, your business experiment will have its challenges.  People with different mindsets might arrive in and be employees within your organization.  They may have different views of how the business is run, etc.  The difference is that you, as the leader, retain final decision-making authority.  Your business is not a Representative Republic as is the USA. Nonetheless, if your governing documents are not top of mind, then challenges will come into your business, which will take your organization away from its core purpose and be another distraction that requires energy for resolution.

This week, take time to continue the celebration of our nation’s 250th Anniversary by revisiting your operational documents and bringing them to a top-of-mind place in all your team members’ minds.
