Alignment – Thinking, Speaking, Acting

As 2025 begins, we have a unique opportunity to start over once again. We can look back on 2024 and think about all of the various things that went right and the equal, if not greater, number of things that did not turn out as desired. This new beginning is a time of alignment or, in many cases, re-alignment.  We need to challenge ourselves and see if what we think is aligned with what we say and then what we actually do. It appears simple, but it is a struggle when working with many leaders.

This is not a negative observation of leaders. All of us, if we are truthful with ourselves, struggle with alignment from time to time. We can rationalize it and blame it on the pace of business. We can identify dozens of things that cause us to drift from our best alignment to one we accept but not necessarily the one we desire.

Some leaders are far better than others at keeping their alignment. What causes them to navigate workplace dynamics while others in similar situations struggle? To the best of our observations, it boils down to having a foundation and framework they live by in all situations. Regardless of what is coming at them, they rely 100% on their Core Values and the associated key principles they live by and operate their organization under.

We all have habits and routines that assist us in our daily activities. Maybe it is your morning commute and stopping for coffee to start the day, or perhaps it is opening up your PC browser and checking the balances in your bank accounts. Whatever those daily actions are, you do them almost unconsciously because you do them so frequently that you don’t have to stop and think about how or why you do them.

This consistency in your routine gives you confidence and order. You trust in the action and thus don’t question what you are doing, which allows you to focus more on what you will do with the result of your actions. Some of us have done our habits so often that we don’t even know we are doing them.

As stated earlier, the start of a new calendar year allows us to re-align some of our habits and routines.  It only happens when we make a hard stop on the business of daily activity, and we consciously think about what we do, why we are doing it, and what governs what and how we do things.  We then need to live our new model.  If your model needs adjustment, then now is the time to make those adjustments.  Give yourself the green light to make positive changes to your framework and foundation so you are in complete alignment.

This week, as we re-engage in the workplace, take time to evaluate the results of 2024 and look at the ways and means by which those outcomes were accomplished.  Is everything aligned in your person, and then how is the organization’s alignment?  The way you operate will dictate the way your team operates.  If need be, evaluate your core values and key principles that are your guide for operating your business.  If they need to be tweaked, do so rather than just accepting another year of the same results. 2025 is upon us; let’s make the best of the next 300+ days.
