Some years ago, Emotional Intelligence and its influence on business people’s success and challenges came onto the scene. At first, it was quiet as it stepped into the soft and fuzzy world of emotions, and business was all hard and rigid. There was no place for such considerations in the business world. The reality is that Emotional Intelligence was already in the business arena but was being suppressed.
Over time, Emotional Intelligence began to work its way into training, development, and presentations on the factory floor and the boardroom. The challenge was that although it was working its way in, was it actually being embraced to make a difference? Like many perceived new ways of doing things, it is met with various levels of skepticism. Sometimes, it is granted as it needs a level of proving out, and in other cases, it is dismissed because it causes people to be uneasy or vulnerable. Thus, they squelch it before it gets a hold in the organization.
One of the more challenging areas for people to embrace emotional intelligence is that its initial execution happens in the individuals and not the other person, company, or even the customer. When a trigger occurs, the individual must navigate what happens next. Do they instinctively react, or do they self-regulate the situation and respond?
Many variables come into play regarding how we react or respond to a trigger. Instincts are not necessarily bad as they can be very valuable if they have been groomed first through understanding and appreciation of the elements of the event that caused the trigger. On the other hand, if a new trigger is put into play, detecting and determining the trigger’s level and a person’s ability to self-regulate to that new incoming situation is key to the ultimate best outcome.
As we all navigate the triggers in our lives at work, home, play, and even driving our vehicles on the street, we all can benefit from a richer understanding and appreciation for our triggers and how we react or respond. To assist our clients in this discovery process, we reach into our toolbox for one of our collection devices to gather insights that don’t necessarily answer questions about our emotional intelligence but raise critical questions about how to re-regulate ourselves and the situations we encounter. What is our motivation to self-regulate our situations?
