Over the next 4 weeks, we will cause you to review and consider the important “Value” elements of your business. Our exploration will look at – People, Culture, Sustainability, and Profitability.
This week, we explore your team – the people who make things happen.
There are a few natural laws of business from our perspective. Here are just a couple for consideration.
Nothing happens till the sale happens
Your people are your most important asset
These two are introduced here as they are tightly glued together. Your business exists only because your organization is made up of people (even if you are a solopreneur), and you sell or provide a product or service. Without some human intervention, a business does not exist. Without products or services, you have nothing to offer in the marketplace. These seem pretty straightforward, but over time, all too many business leaders can inadvertently dismiss these very simple, natural laws of business.
It starts with people, and in the long run, it ends with people. Even before the inspiration or idea for a product or service emerges from a person’s mind, the person already exists. Once the idea begins to mature, additional people are needed to make it come to fruition. People to make or deliver the offering, and people to buy and consume the offering. There are people needed on both sides of the relationship and transaction. Because people are needed to build and support your business, they are truly one of the most important value elements in your organization.
The challenge this week for you, as a business leader, is to take some time to see whether you have drifted away from meaningful appreciation of the people parts of your business. This includes not only your team members but also your customers, clients, vendors, and the communities in which you live and work. As a business grows or stagnates, effort, focus, and energy are put into either building or surviving. When the focus drifts away from the needs and development of the humanistic side of the business, it becomes even more challenging to grow the business and move it away from stagnation toward a fuller capability to offer to the marketplace.
People are far more than your most important asset. People are not things. A quality leader does not depreciate people in their financial records. They raise the value of their people by investing in them and growing them to grow the business.
So, where do you stand on focusing on your people, your team, your staff as it relates to the most important value in your business?
