It’s back to school season

As we approach the unofficial end of summer  – no, not Labor Day, but when our children go back into the classroom, we as business leaders must also use this time of the year to go back into the growth and development mindset for our people and organization. The summer allowed for the recharging of human and business batteries. Time was taken for vacations and long weekends to spend time in a number of ways, which did not include business work. This time investment provides the energy needed to move into the final months of 2024 with the vigor and strength to see the best results for each person and collectively for the team and organization. As we get focused on realizing the best outcomes for 2024, it is equally important to invest in the development of yourself and your team.

With everyone gearing up for a productive fall, now is a great time to open their minds to new and improved business-building methods. The key is to identify the most favorable places to inject investment energy so as to realize not just short-term gain in 2024 but also position your people for long-term self-growth for 2025 and the future.

With eight months of 2024 almost completed, you have a reasonable track record of what is working, what is not meeting expectations, and what you might have noticed about unknown variables positively affecting your organization’s progress. These are the areas to dig into a bit more deeply to identify if they can be improved or if you can expand what is working well and leverage it to a greater extent. This is the classroom of understanding what is going on in the business rather than just executing tasks of the business.

The phrase – working on the business rather than in the business has been a popular way to identify that leaders must spend time working on improving the business in order for it to mature and grow.  If leaders only execute what is day-to-day in the business, then the business will eventually become stagnant.  This is challenging for the business itself and the people in the business get disenchanted and potentially migrate away from the organization.

This week, the challenge for the business leader is actually to go to work on your business.  Take some time to go into the classroom of understanding to see what is going on in your business and identify key elements that need to be improved upon or leveraged more extensively to grow your asset.

Take the next 5 minutes or so, get out a clean piece of paper, open a blank file on your computer, or talk into your recording device, and simply list the items off the top of your mind that you believe need further insights to determine how they can be improved or leveraged to take your business to the next level. Take your list and dig deeper into the classroom of understanding so you can learn from the first 8 months to apply it to the future.
