Leap Day

Every 4 years we get an extra day to get the calendar back in sync with the celestial bodies of the universe.  Another day of work or play depends on what day of the week it falls.  This year we get an extra business development day! So how might we prioritize this bonus day in two weeks, so we take full advantage of it in 2024?

One day does not seem to be that big of a deal but if we look at it differently you might just want to use it productively to capitalize on it this year.  First of all, every 4 years a leap day takes place on a leap year which also coincides with a presidential election.  That might be enough to cause you to front-end some activity as in November of 2024 your business will likely be distracted by the election.  This could be due to voting or the post-election drama.  Either way, your business loses time in November so grab it early this year in February.

To use this unique day to your benefit you have a couple of weeks to think of something special to do with and/or for your customers, staff, vendors, or the community. Here are a few ideas that might spark an innovative or creative way to bring your organization to life.

  1. Have it be a weekend or dress casual day or better yet, dress up day at work.
  2. Consider a customer or vendor appreciation day.  Something you can attach to leap day, so you only have to plan it out every four years.  Make it different and special while not committing to an annual event.
  3. Provide some special sales incentives that only apply to that day to move sales opportunities through the pipeline to close in February rather than waiting until March or worse off into the second quarter of the year.
  4. Open it up to staff to think of something new, different, unusual, and low-budget that they would like to see take place.  Get the creative juices flowing so they can use them after leap day for the rest of the fiscal/calendar year.
  5. Be a good corporate citizen and bring your business into the community in a different way.  What can demonstrate your business’ “Purpose” for the good of the community?

This week you are in front of the curve to innovate on bringing Feb 29th to life.  Don’t let it be a movie of recurring nothingness.  Have it be something special that involves your team and everyone your business has relationships and transactions with all the other days of the year.
