Mid Year check-in

6 months have flown by and now we are into the dog days of summer.  In the northern part of the country the mind set shifts a bit to vacation mode, kids being out of school, etc. The weather is one that invites us to spend some time outdoors gathering up the vitamin D from the sunshine we miss during other parts of the year. Our businesses migrate into covering shifts for missing staff. Our customers might also shift their expectations, wanting things even more timely on their schedule than on ours so they can use the extra time to go out and have fun.

As leaders we put on our running shoes and try to adapt our business models to allow for this time to be relatively smooth and productive.  At this time in our working society, it is a little bit more complex as the talent challenges are ever present lending a hand to the complexity of keeping the machine operating. We are up to the challenges and put our best foot forward to not only survive the seasonal cycle, but we leverage it to build our organizations that much stronger.

It is a time for leaders to pause and take a pulse on the first six months of the year.  What is going well?  What is not contributing the way you anticipated?  What plans and goals need attention to either get them back on track or maybe leverage them to achieve even more than expected? If you have not previously done a business review in the past, then now is the time to start.

Begin by retrieving your 2023 business plans.  Hopefully they have not fallen into the recycling bin or been packed away with past desires. Some of you might be chuckling right now because the last statement is very true or because you can hardly believe anyone would do such a thing.  Both are very valid and unfortunately have been witnessed in the past. Regardless of the past, you are a leader of your organization, and it is time to step up and look a bit more deeply into your successes or trends which need attention.

Sometimes leaders take the I know what is or is not taking place approach to a review.  Rather than looking at the actual details of a situation they depend too much on their gut level.  The bank account has money, bills are paid, and clients are sending in checks, so everything is good.  This approach might work for very small businesses but for most this casual approach is the start of trouble.

During the most recent health pandemic, the businesses that had a solid understanding of their business and knew what was working and what was not, they not only survived the challenges but many of them took advantage of the time and positioned their business to ready themselves for more growth. The same is true for a mid-year review.  Knowing where you are at and having a solid platform to build on gives you a unique advantage in the marketplace to springboard from in the next 6 months.

As part of our review here at JKL Associates, we have taken the time to place all of our last 6 months plus many of our past years Promise Guide video Insights and Words of Wisdom video book reviews on our YouTube channel for your viewing and sharing use.
