As referenced last week, the ebb and flow of successful businesses is heavily dependent on the platform it builds upon. Through challenges and times of calm, the business which has its priorities in place will not only withstand the turbulence but will be agile enough to pivot and make lemonade from lemons.
Leaders today need to be focused on what contributes to the overall success and outcomes of the organization. In the past this was measured by a bottom-line net profit focus only. This many times came at the expense of getting product or services out the door to customers but with out much regard for the people, the pace, the perception or for what ultimate purpose the business was delivering their products to market.
The demands of the forthcoming workforce are more enlightened and less tolerable to such a narrow focus. They are very much interested in the overall purpose for which they are working and contributing their energy toward. It is not just a paycheck at the end of a period. Do not misinterpret this aspect. They do want reasonable compensation for their efforts, but they also need and want to contribute in a much greater perspective or purpose mind set of deliverables.
Businesses have always had a “Purpose” for existing. The difference is that when an owner or leader was asked about their purpose the typical response would be – Make a Profit. There is nothing wrong with making a profit. In fact, if your organization struggles in this area then just maybe the “Prioritized Leader” Mastermind offering is right up your alley. The next Mastermind Cohort of business leaders is forming now for a May 2021 start. Reach out to JKL Associates for more information.
Today, the workforce leaders must be more intentional about the purpose of their organization. When the purpose of the business is well refined and active in all actions of the team then quality consistent profits are sure to follow. Unfortunately, when leadership is not aligned with a strong solid purpose then they chase in multiple directions seeking profits rather than generating them.
The simple answer about placing “Purpose” and the number one priority of your organization is to set the stage. Build a solid foundation on which not only is the business position for future growth but so are all the people, processes, and outcomes. A well-defined “Why” your organization delivers a compelling future attracts not only customers but also the top talent in the marketplace.
If you think in terms of “Profit” as the final measurement of your organization’s success, then I offer up that a compelling “Purpose” has the inexhaustible currency of vision and values. Regardless of the challenges placed in front of an organization, when a passionate vision and core values are aligned and integrated into all decisions, the business moves in the best potential direction.
