Revisiting the 5 V’s

As we embark on a new calendar year, it is a good time for leaders to pause and refocus on key elements to make this year the best it can possibly be. Hopefully the nitty gritty of budgets and marketing plans are well refined and launching as you read this.  Your last quarter investment in getting these ready will now begin to play out and when executed well will show a positive return on your energy.

It is at the beginning of a fiscal year that sometimes we default back into a place of thinking everyone is still on the same page as they were in the fall when the plans for 2024 were crafted. This oversight can cause efforts to become distracted and place your new year plan launch in jeopardy. If not that, then it can simply come out of the gate more like a whimper rather than a roar.

To assist in helping you launch 2024 in the best possible way, for the next few weeks we will be revisiting the 5 core components that can move your efforts from concepts to outcomes.  We will look at what are referred to as the 5 V’s – Vision, Values, Vehicles, Vocabulary, Valuation.

We will explore each of these in more detail in the coming weeks, but for the start of 2024 it is time to peel back the covers on your strategies and enable your teams to move forward with confidence and direction.   It cannot be emphasized enough that the role of leaders is to stimulate the energy of the staff. Not only to accomplish the objectives of the coming year, but to help them feel integrated with the contribution and success.

By reaffirming the Vision, Values, Vehicles, Vocabulary and Valuation, a leader is steeping into the outcomes directly with the team and not just observing the work effort.  Too often leaders make assumptions that everyone is on the same page.  We have even heard the comment “Well they have been working here for years so they should know by now.” This simple but concerning statement can be quite limiting in the growth of the business.  If everyone operates under prior years expectation, then a business can begin to plateau which in today marketplace is sliding backwards.

Take for instance coaches of athletic teams.  In the locker room before the game to they make such comments like – “Everyone go out there and do the same as last time.” Not typically, they are infusing energy into the team members and reviewing the new expectations for success in the game. They are building confidence and excitement. They are painting a picture of what the future will look like through their vision of the outcome or the game.

This week and over the next few weeks as we dive deeper into the 5 V’s, use your 3-5 minutes as you read the weekly Guidepost to challenge yourself. Take yourself and your organization to a better, new level on each of the 5 V’s. No holding back in 2024.  This will be your best outcome ever!
