Strategy and Plans

As we continue our launch into 2025, there always seem to be many discussions and roll-out efforts regarding the strategies and plans for the coming year.  Congratulations to all those organizations that took the time to plan out the goals and objectives for 2025 and are taking additional time to share them with the team.  That may sound like an odd statement, but over the years, when interacting with leadership and team members alike, it always amazes JKL Associates that transferring strategies, plans, goals, and objectives is not always as straightforward as one might expect.

All the strategizing and planning can be just more wasted time if they are not shared, executed, and tracked for performance. It should go without saying, but part of the planning process needs to include how the plans will be managed. Who will be the champion? Who will be the lead person to track actual progress and offer adjustments to get the plan back on track or free up resources for other plans if they are available?

Depending on the maturity of your leadership in managing strategies and plans, it will be critical that you, as business owners, do not assume they know what they are doing. Unfortunately, some very seasoned personnel have fallen flat on their faces on projects, not because they were incapable but because they were weak at taking the necessary steps to manage the objectives and resources. Sometimes, the simple things get in the way of progress. It starts with leading and project managing the strategies.

Success does not come from defining good strategies and having plans. It materializes when such plans move from ideas to action and execution. Again, the best-laid plans are not perfect from the start. New information constantly presents itself, and adjustments to the plans must be made. This is not promoting a “Plan of the Day” approach where leadership changes its mind each day and takes a new direction.  It supports that as new information becomes available, there is a conscious pause to evaluate how this data needs to be incorporated or set aside and continue moving forward as outlined initially. This planned adjustment cycle needs to be understood and part of your strategies and plans from the beginning.

As you roll out 2025 initiatives, goals, plans, objectives, etc. this week, ensure the information is shared across all parties involved.  As adjustments are needed, gather the correct information and people together so that as changes are discussed and moved into action, everyone is aware of the shift and the communication is concise and clear.  This gets the action moving forward in a timely fashion, thus contributing to a successful outcome in the future.
