Strong roots hold the tree in place during a storm

It seems like this summer, there have been a number of storms, which rattled the building, gave a spectacular light show, and dumped a lot of rain.  Each of these events might have caused you to be thankful for the solidness of the enclosure you might have been in at the time of the storm.  That is based on you being in a building and not tenting in a campground.  During one of these storms, the trees in the neighborhood were being twisted and pushed in a variety of directions as the winds passed through with the storm. It caused a thought about how business leaders and their businesses are much like those trees weathering the storm.

The business marketplace has its own kinds of storms. Maybe it is not winds, lightning, or rain, but there are events that cause the business to be twisted and turned around. Leaders, too, have events that cause similar agitation to take place both in their business and personal lives. So, what is the crucial thing that helps both trees and leaders stay firmly planted?

It is their core root system.

A tree not only spreads its roots outward to gain access to water and nutrients, but it is also the primary structural system that keeps the tree upright, allowing it to grow toward the sky. This, in turn, allows the leaves to gather in sunlight, which propagates further growth of the tree and the expansion of its root systems. The roots, in harmony with the sun, water, and food, enable growth and the tree to mature to its fullest capacity.

We have the exact same needs and capacity for growth in business and people.

As leaders, you need a solid and extensive root system for your organization to reach its full potential. So, what are the roots of your business? Core Purpose, Core Values, Core Principles, and Vision/Mission are the primary building blocks or roots that solidly plant your business on the path of growth and success.

If a tree does not grow its root system, it will be uprooted, fall over, and wither away in a storm. Likewise, a business without a solid framework and foundation of Core Purpose, Values, and Principles will get knocked off course when the marketplace starts to push on its very existence.

Tree roots have an enormous battle to push through compacted soil to keep reaching further out and make the root base all the stronger and broader.  Trees keep pushing for this to happen.  Unfortunately, people are a bit less driven to keep pushing in the business world.  Owners will start the process of building a solid foundation and quickly check off nice words as complete and move on to the next issue of the day.  Rather than staying the course and building not just nice words on paper but a solid foundation to grow tall and wide on their Core Purpose, Values, and Principles, owners too often want the ideals of the framework but not to be accountable to the framework.

This week, as you strategize about the next most important step in building your business, pause and reflect on your root system.  Do you have a framework and foundation upon which to build a strong and healthy business, or will you eventually get blown over in the next marketplace storm?
