Summer is right around the corner

Tomorrow, June 20, 2025, is the official first day of summer – the summer solstice. It is the time of year that many look forward to spending time with family and friends for a backyard gathering or time on the road vacationing. Business leaders sometimes consider it a complex time to cover all the work to be completed, as team members take time away from the office.

This time of warmer and longer days is not only a great time to enjoy some time off from the day-to-day work demands, but is actually critical to recharging the mind and body.  All year long, we chase this or that project and make crazy commitments, followed by long days and late nights.  That, coupled with time away from family and friends, drains your inner being.  This time of recharging yourself can’t be skipped over.  Continuous work and no time to rebuild yourself can lead to a path to poor health and a number of potentially poor decision-making events.

As critical as eating right and getting proper sleep, taking a break from the work routine needs to be part of your success regimen. This is true for all team members. Thus, leadership needs good planning to support solid operations so that the business can provide its customers with excellent service during the summer months and help team members take a break and not feel guilty about being off work. That last statement might have made you smile a little, thinking your team members are not concerned about taking time off.  If your culture is such that everyone supports and cares for each other, they don’t like leaving their colleagues in a talent deficit.

Today, you need to review your talent plan for the next 90 days.  Are all key functions supported with proper talent balance, while some of your team members take time off? What small but important acknowledgements can you provide during these months when everyone pitches in to make sure the operation works as smoothly as possible, while there might be a few hands short?

When leadership invests in the health and well-being of their team members, culture energizes. It is like solar power being pumped into each and every person to contribute at solid levels year after year. Without the recharging investment, the team’s battery drains and, over time, begins to erode the quantity and quality of results for the business.

Look at the summer recharging period as a time to invest in your team in special ways so that come the fall, everyone is refreshed and ready to climb the next mountain.
