We live in a time of abundant information and data points. It seems like everything can be counted in one way or another. All of these information elements can then be twisted, turned, and contorted in many ways, so what does one do to sift and sort through all the items? The answer is not always that simple. At least at this moment, no magic wand can digest and then regurgitate the data directly into productive, valuable packets.
The future may have some tools and approaches that will significantly help in this somewhat daunting process of collecting, sorting through, and presenting back lots of information so a constructive decision can be made using the data. The growth of artificial intelligence and what it potentially can offer are rapidly entering not just the workspace but life in general.
For most of us, we might take for granted the use of Smartphones (handheld computers), which do far more than allow us to speak to another person when separated. These devices are now everyone’s primary photo-taking unit, not just for photos but also for video and live streaming. They are also a navigation tool and arrival timing device. Many people check their phones while still in bed to see how their route to work is impacted by traffic. Maybe they can catch a few more winks or have to bust out of bed to shower and get to work because the navigation tells them it will take an additional 30 minutes to their destination.
We take all this data crunching for granted. When Smartphones were introduced about 20 years ago, only a few people saw what the power of these tools would become. As a result, some excellent outcomes have happened, such as those geographically challenged individuals now having a personal navigation system at their fingertips. At the same time, a whole group of Smartphone children could not find their way from point “A” to point “B” if their lives depended upon it. As the data was crunched and delivered to the Smartphone, some of our basic skills have not been utilized and thus are starting to diminish. The reality is this phenomenon takes place relatively hidden or quietly. When the smartphone battery dies and people are left to fend for themselves, they don’t want to be found out, so they hide their lost navigation skills.
This whole discussion about using Smartphones and Navigation tools is intended to provoke your thinking and change your mindset as we embark on the next level of AI (Artificial Intelligence) expansion. AI, like Smartphones and GPS, uses lots of data and, in many cases, crunches it into useful life-valued tools, processes, and applications. It will take some time to sort through the good, the bad, and the misuse of such AI improvements. The key here is that AI is not going away. As a business leader, you need to consider how it can be used to help your organization be the best it can be.
This week, if you are somewhat unclear about artificial intelligence’s implications for your business or life in general, set aside a few minutes daily or weekly to start the process of understanding the who, what, when, where, why, how, etc. of AI. Get an understanding of how it fits into your culture and where you will need to set limits on its contribution.
