Dream Big – Journey Big

As business leaders we can sometimes get so caught up in the day-to-day stuff of our business transactions that we don’t stop and dream.  We are so focused on the next thing on our to do list that we are not even sure sometimes how all those items add up to the vision or dreams we have for our business, our staff, our families, our communities etc.

The rate of life seems to accelerate each and every day.  Technology is viewed as an enabler to automate, and it does have its valuable contribution. If we as the leader of ourselves and our business can’t separate from the pulse of technology, then are we leading or following?

As children we often had idle time which we might have stared at the clouds and found animals or boats or any number of odd shapes.  We would conjure up stories and ideas which not only passed the time but filled our minds with awe and wonder. This time of dreaming was the seeding time of our future.

Now that we are in the middle of running a business, we almost find idle time evil.  We try to pack as much as we can into a time unit whether it be a week, a day, and hour and even a minute. We pride ourselves and show off to the world in any number of ways our time contribution.  From bragging about only needing 4 hours of sleep to closing a sale while supposedly watching your child play sports. The stories have changed from clouds in the sky to a means to justify not dreaming at all.

As mentioned, those early days of dreaming feed your current growth and progress as a person.  It launched you on a magnificent journey of twists and turns to arrive at your present place in time. If we abandon our ability to dream, then we close off our opportunity to grow.

I’m not suggesting that you unplug from your present state of being and go sit in the woods and force yourself to dream.  That most likely will not be productive as the best dreams and journeys come not from being forced but from the depth of silence and peace.

As we enter the last couple of months of 2022, there is time for you to take a few cycles of time and pause.  To stop the technology enhanced push for quicker, faster, timelier and settle back into looking at the vision of yourself, your business just like looking at the clouds as a child and see what it brings to your dreams. How will the big dream play out in the next big journey?  How will you lead during that time of excitement and challenge?

Put some time on your calendar during the next 7 days (go ahead right now and put it on your calendar) to unplug from your business, your technology and the like and give yourself the permission to dream.  Not think about the future but actually dream.  No boundaries, no foreseen obstacles, no pre-engineered scheme to direct your thoughts.  Just pure unfocused dreaming. See what the universe might want to be telling you and you have been way too centered on other things to even hear or listen.
