Halloween 2026

In a couple of days, the ghouls and goblins may roam the streets of your neighborhood or gather at a nearby school or place of worship to support the annual activity of “Trick or Treat.” This tradition in the United States dates back to the early 1900s but solidified in the 1950s, when sugar rationing ended and candy became more available.   But its roots date back centuries to Celtic and Medieval times. Since the late 50s, this once-children’s festivity has grown into a massive business marketplace, including adult parties, haunted mansions, and many other ways to make this time of year not so hallow.  Spending on this holiday has grown to an average of 10-13 billion annually and, depending on the year, is second only to Christmas and sometimes third to Thanksgiving.

As we approach this night of masquerade, it is key that everyone view this holiday through the lens of safety. On average, over 3000 children are injured on Halloween, and it is the second most likely holiday for injuries to be fatal.

Halloween is a day to be celebrated.  It allows for a short-term escape to fantasy for children, and yes, some adults too. But we must all be aware of its potential consequences.  May this Halloween of 2026 be filled with joy and laughter.  Be safe out there.

Journey On!
