Tomorrow, June 20, 2025, is the official first day of summer – the summer solstice. It is the time of year that many look forward to spending time with family and friends for a backyard gathering or time on the road vacationing. Business leaders sometimes consider it a complex time to cover all the work to be completed, as team members take time away from the office.
It seems like a pretty simple question, and in theory, there should be a corresponding answer or plan of attack to complete the items for the day. Unfortunately, too many team members arrive at work daily and start their day asking themselves this question. So, the questions for leadership are: Why are team members uncertain of their priorities and points of contribution? What can the organization do to enable better understanding and focus among team members? For the bad news, there is no one answer as to how or why this takes place, and additionally, each organization needs to address the matter in ways that their culture supports.
A week does not go by without a client, prospective client, colleague, or general business acquaintance bringing up some challenge related to the workforce and the disparity of work ethic in the marketplace. They typically don’t call it directly out as such, but as the conversation evolves, it becomes clear that differing views of work ethic influence the situation they describe.
With the celebration of Memorial Day behind us, it is the unofficial start of summer in the northern part of the nation. Although it technically does not begin until the summer solstice on June 20 at 10:42 pm EDT, the pent-up demand for warmer days and longer days to spend time outside are welcome to most individuals. At the same time, the warmer weather and the increased distractions experienced by staff members introduce some challenges for business owners.
In the flurry of business, we pause and take time this coming Monday to remember those who gave all so the United States could continue to be a pillar of light and peace in the world. We all have opinions about this nation’s past, present, and future. Still, our ability to voice those thoughts has come at the price of those men and women whose memorials and memories we acknowledge this coming holiday.
In the course of day-to-day business dynamics, we can sometimes get so caught up in the fast-paced flow that we miss the crucial small building blocks to a more successful future. It is always very exciting to celebrate the big wins—those large sales, the completion of a significant project, the implementation of a new system or technology, and many more large-scale initiatives that are completed in a timely and productive fashion. This is when there is a special excitement in the air at the organization.
Over the years, we have had the honor and privilege of building relationships with some top-shelf business owners and leaders. We have also interacted with business people with great potential to be leaders but elected not to allow themselves to grow into leadership roles for many reasons.
